During
the early 1970s, I spent some time as a Staff Announcer and newsreader
for BBC Radios 1 & 2, also DJ-ing twice a week on the Saturday Early Show
& Music Through Midnight. At 21, I was the youngest person to hold the
job (and probably the hairiest), and I may still be...?It was alien to me, all this MoR stuff, especially the covers of hits by dodgy radio 'combos' (eg: 'Lady Marmalade' by Johnny Upstart and his Happy Six), as demanded by the Musicians' Union. But the experience was fantastic, especially being coaxed into the 'right' way of reading the Shipping Forecast and Football Results by my boss, 'Gentleman' Jimmy Kingsbury. Sadly, I have no airchecks of either, so it's just "Mr West Country Smoothy" here... |
