Glasgow's Radio City went on the air on New Year's Eve, 1973. I was taken on in 1978 by James Gordon, the Managing Director, and when the following ratings came out, I'd achieved the the highest half-hours outside breakfast that the station had ever had, ... not bad for the token Sassennach. I've still got the JICRAR book (sad!), but no airchecks.

I loved working there and the audience was amazingly warm, intelligent and quick-witted. When I moved to the afternoon show and got landed with most of the station's daytime "meaningful speech" output, there was a great opportunity to meet loads of local characters and go to some fascinating places. By now, I was also presenting weekly Midnight Rock show. Great fun!

Unfortunately, when I told them of my impending move to the BBC in Manchester, I got the graveyard shift to work out my notice. The Falklands War had just started and we played a nightly game of 'Battleships & Cruisers'. No-one moaned about 'being offended' in those days: we just had jammed switchboards at 3am with prospective contestants!
